We are UMCG 3D Lab - department of MKA surgery

Development of high-quality patient-specific implants and devices, based on 3D virtual surgery planning.

3D Lab

The UMCG 3D Lab was founded in 2015 and has since been working on high-quality patient-specific implants and devices based on 3D virtual planning of surgical procedures. Thanks to the combined expertise of technical physicists, mechanical engineers, biomedical engineers and physicians, the lab is able to deploy new technologies (such as augmented reality, 3D printing and artificial intelligence) in everyday medical care. Scientific research is also conducted to get the most out of these technologies and determine which applications have the greatest added value for patients. This leads to continuous improvement of care in terms of predictability, accuracy, safety and speed.

Oral, Maxillofacial and Maxillofacial Surgery (UMCG department of MKA surgery)

The UMCG 3D lab was founded by the department of MKA surgery of the UMCG. In the field of Oral, Maxillofacial and Maxillofacial Surgery (MKA surgery), 3D virtual planning and associated technology have been widely used for many years. The use of this 3D technology also ensures safer, faster and more accurate procedures and treatments. The practitioner can also use 3D technology to make the best treatment choices together with the patient. The UMCG 3D lab was initiated by MKA surgery and it is therefore this specialty that makes the greatest contribution to the continuous development of the technology and its safe application. This is evidenced, among other things, by a large regional purchase of 3D products from the UMCG 3D lab by hospitals from the 3 Northern provinces. This so-called “clinical network” also increases the potential scientific database for follow-up research.
